JJ1000's list of top restaurants and dishes in Miami:

1. Backyard BBQ (New chef in mid 2017 totally new menu): Burnt ends, 2nd cut brisket, Dinosaur Rib, BBQ Sundae, BBQ Burger.

2. 26: Sushi pizza is  a must I prefer it with baked salmon, then the Passion Mojito, Sushi Teriyaki tempuraed, Cilantro Aioli dip and truffle fires, all of their soups are good. Miso Bass is incredible as well.

3. Harbour Bistro, new menus in early 2018: Chicken and waffles just perfect, duck a l'orange pot stickers, millionaire ramen, lamb shank, charcuterie platter if that's your thing... Also serving brunch, Chicken and waffles again, eggs Benedict with bacon on top,

4. Fuego: Flatbreads are a must, then the back ribs, pastrami egg rolls, smores dessert, perfect date drink are good. (Update March 2017, the app chef and bbq chef isn't there anymore and the quality has been spotty from recent reviews.)

5. Zak The Baker. Menu changes too often to recommend stuff. Not Cholov Yisroel.

6. Kosh: Chocolate souffle and korean beef with extra sauce are good.

7. Rustiko: Spinach and Artichoke Dip, (Quinoa Salad is very good), (Pappardelle Mushroom if lunch), Mushrooms Panzerotti is an absolute must order only down side is it's a dinner only item. Oreo cheescake dessert but make sure it's fresh.

8. Harbour Grill: The Harbour Grill Filet or TheKing Reserve steaks are great. Supreme Burger is very good as well.

9. Pizza type options:

Foozo: Foozolis, the caprese foozoli with extra balsamic sauce and garlic aoili, their pastas are good as well.

Jerusalem Pizza: Best plain pie, get it fresh in store, coated fries good as well.

Lenny's pizza: Gan Eden Pie.

Also notable unique places are The Freeze which makes ices, serendipity makes ice cream (there is one next door to ZTB now), and Miami Beach Chocolates turtles and bark now also in Surfside!

Does anyone know about parking on Miami Beach?
Is there anywhere free to park if you're going to the beach for the day? Or is there public transportation?

Maybe a little further north like 45th or 46th but that's just splitting hairs.

There are plenty of buses that run along collins that can get you to the beach, granted you'd need to define beach. You mentioned that you were looking at the Deuville, which I believe is on 67th or so, it's located on the beach so you can just go downstairs, however if you'd prefer to be further south when on the beach and assuming that you have 4 or less people you may want to consider calling a cab. They are plentiful down there and assuming there is no heavy traffic could be cheaper than a bus if you are around 4 people. I think buses are about $2.35 or so per person per direction.

Beware my response is long --- Only read this if it affects you

-------------------------------------

Yes and no. There has been a lot of confusion with mixed messages coming from all sources, both Canadian and Floridian.

Basically, the State of Florida passed a law that went into effect Jan 1, 2013, that as it currently stands, requires all non-US citizens to carry an international driver's license when driving within the State of Florida. From my understanding, the reasoning behind this is that because of the large numbers of foreign tourists from non-English speaking countries in Florida, this law was passed to help others read a license in the event that that is needed to be done. The problem here is that the law was passed in a manner that included English speaking countries as well, namely Canada, which theoretically should not be a problem because their licenses are already printed in English.

Basically when this issue came to light last week, it caused a lot of media attention particularly in Canada. As a result, state legislators stated that in their next sitting they will amend the law to exempt Canadians from this requirement. Florida State Troopers and other local law enforcement agencies stated that they will not enforce this law on Canadians either. The only time this law may become an issue for you, until it's corrected, is in the event of an auto accident. Although most insurance companies also stated that they will not enforce the rules associated with this law, you can still be denied coverage. The reason for that is technically based on how the law stands, if you don't have an international drivers license you do not have a license and therefore your insurance company can decide how they enforce coverage. Keep in mind it's an insurance company. The best thing to do is if you have time, is to go to your local CAA/AAA office and get an international driver's license, just to be on the safe side. I believe they are $25.

The law's anticipated amendment according to media reports is sometime in March of this year and it will come into force with the amendments some time in June.

Hi,

I'm going to be in South Florida for the weekend of shabbos hagadol, Mar 20-24th

can anybody recommend a decent place to stay (condo, hotel, motel) that is near a shul (and in close proximity (drive) of kosher supermarkets and restaurants.. )

there is also a chance that we would like to stay with another family and that makes the search even harder cuz it would mean 2 or 3 hotel rooms or a 3 bedroom apt/condo

i'm having a hard time searching on vrbo and homeaway.. if anybody has any leads about apts or any ideas which hotel is near a shuls it will be greatly appreciated!!

i have SPG, but the rooms that are still available are starting at 11k a night, is there any tricks that i should know to get cheaper rates? do rooms open up later?

Thanks for you help!

In the Miami Beach area there are several  hotel options that are near shuls. Try finding a hotel around 41st and Collins (5-10 blocks in either direction is still walkable) There are shuls and kosher restaurants everywhere in that area.

Try to VRBO for the Fontainebleau Hotel. There are other hotel options as well but I am not sure which ones have private units (if any) listed on VRBO. There are some postings I've seen on this site for Tower 41 as well. This is a private condo with a shul on premises, however it is not directly on the beach but still walking distance to the beach.

Hope this helps.
