So can you help a n00b? When you flu domestic you don't need a passport, when you land in EWR you're at gate 132 and the gate for EWR-TLV is 138, you can head straight to that gate without going through any customs. Do you guys mean the customs right before boarding the flight?

There is no border at all. There is just secondary screening for all flights traveling to TLV. It's simply a security screening    process, nothing to do with the USA government.

You may get a random SSS which means Secondary screening for a variety of reasons e.g. buying last minute flight etc.
