I thought that the airlines pay nearly nothing for awards?

BTW was there a way to redeem Matmid points for AA flights?

See here - http://www.elal.co.il/elal/english/matmidfrequentflyer/benefitsfromelalpartners/airlines/americanairlines.html

Yes, that probably was never used by anyone.

So on LY they say you cannot cancel awards, so if that means anything then maybe AA won't allow also. But then again, one doesnt have to do with the other.

Last date for issuing Matmid bonus tickets for American Airlines flights will also be October 31st, 2014 – after this date changing or canceling the bonus ticket will not be permitted

I don't think much people redeem EY miles for AA flights either.

Why Davkeh LY?

LY made it impossible to actually redeem.

So even LY booked thousands of people on AA flights, it was still not worth for them?
Still adds up.
And for that reason they charge you miles. You think they lost out when they got rid of 67.5k miles on a LY flight in J which probably costed them $400?

I have no idea what the numbers are, but AA would rather have people use miles on AA or on carriers where there is reciprocity so that they don't need to spend $$$.

The whole point of LH *net blocking was that UA didn't want to pay out of pocket for LH flights and there wasn't enough reciprocity so they artificially limited it to limit cash outlays.

I believe the point of LH *net blocking was because LH charges a whooping $1000 vs other carriers who charge much less than that.

AA pays out lots of money for LY award flights but LY doesn't pay out a dime for AA award flights.
What's your surprise?

Either way no way to know who cut if off.
Yea, but they get the mileage liability off their book, and they pay very low rates.
Besides, most non OW partners aren't redeeming on AA flights cuz their FF programs are very small. Not just LY.

I don't think that's the reason.

Given the end of the AA/LY alliance, does it make sense to blow 450k AA points for 5 tix on LY to Israel next summer or wait for AA to begin flying the route (which sounds like a possibility at some point in next 6 months) ... Any advice/guidance to share?

If you see availability and like the dates there is no reason to lose it because of speculation and the unknown.

Except that the reservations may not be cancellable

Think they'll allow changes to OW partners down the line? Even w/ the standard $150 fee.

I don't see why it would be different than every other ended partnership.

Did they announce no cancellations in the other ended partnerships?

If you have partner segments on the itin that may not reopen.
