What does not participating mean? They wont take your money on that day?

Probably means that you can shop there normally, but they will neither start breaking up purchases into $10 increments, nor do $10 gc sales

It is very possible that stores will not want to break up purchase or give GC's, but if they are on the map and you would just swipe one, i am pretty sure you would get the credit.

Eden Wok in New Rochelle last year only would let me buy 4 gift cards. Guy said the same this year, although he did try to make it out that it is Amex limiting it. I called him out and he said they won't do more than a few GC sales.
Although to be fair, I only go there for the buffet night and do sushi take out and easily pack $40 worth of sushiinto the take out container for the $20 they charge.

FWIW, as I know people have asked, and will ask again, i called shop small and they confirmed that a store not being on the map does not mean they are not participating.
In English, if you swipe at any store that meets the T&C (not government, no more than 10? branches, etc.) and accepts AMEX (can't comment on square etc.) then you will get the credit.

So from what I've been reading, is it safe to say that registered businesses using Square Up for swipes and key-ins would not count towards the promo credits? I don't know if the name stated on Square up is listed as the actual business name, so I wonder. I'm wanting to help out family and friends with small businesses is all.
