These days they sell unchanged natural fiber/AKA string which you can use to actually tie the sechach. (Though some are machmir cuz of gezeiras tikra to only tie with an aniva and not a kesher gomur)
I'm already doing maamid d'maamid throughout the rest of the sukkah, I might as well gain the convenience of the cable/zip ties over having to tie knots with string.

agree.
+1 to your maamid demamid eitzah with a zip tie.  (Though it is a drop of a chidush, I can't see why it is different than the standard mamaid demamid of the support beams underneath...)

8X10

That's what I thought. Apparently Leiter has 11 and a half inch rulers. Every 2' panel is actually 1' 11" and every 4' is actually 3' 10" >:(

Ooh, always wanted that. What's the 4th side? Deck wall or completely open?

Either way, a decent amount of the work and headache for me is securing the mats, and you have a lot more ground to cvoer than I do. What do you to make sure they don't blow away?
I recessed my support beams within the walks instead of on top of the walls (dropped them about a 1/2 foot) so the winds don't affect the mats

I heard they do this because decks are standard sizes and this way the sukka will fit.

If I would've been as smart, I wouldn't have been out in the rain the night before sukkos rearranging the schach already.

I actually pointed that out in the other thread where someone was building a sukkah from scratch. It makes it hotter, though it seems like that's not going to be a problem this year. It's not something that can be done on my sukkah though, as the beams that are already permanently up to support the schach are also the beams I hang my tarps from.

If you zip tie the schac mats directly onto the support beams, then the zip tie might be called a direct maamid to the mats (albeit the holding down variety of maamid as opposed to the normal holding up variety). By putting a bamboo pole on top of the mat and zip tying around that as well, the zip tie becomes the maamid of the bamboo poles, which is the maamid of your mat (the actual schach of the sukkah).

That's because it's dimensional lumber.
