Same with most major religions. The debate is always if it is within the framework. Most change is initially seen as not within the framework.
And that's what we are debating here, if this app fits within the framework of the laws of Shabbat. No one dismissed it out of hand just because "my grandfather in Poland didn't have a Shabbat app on his iPhone", we are discussing if the laws of Shabbat can be kept while using such an app...

nauseating. Sounds like conservative or reform.

Besides for all the spelling mistakes which make it sound like it's coming from somewhere in BP.

I don't think those that state "I hope this is a joke" think this should be up for discussion.  ;)

What makes you say that?

true in this specific case but that doesn't mean they are resistant to change. I don't think av"a's point was that it has to be literally debatable, rather that their opinion is based off whether this logically fits into the framework or not. As opposed to "this is something we never did".

To be honest, the problems facing a Shabbos worthy smartphone seem to be insurmountable, it's hard to imagine that one will be coming out...

I disagree.

"I hope it's a joke" means that it's not really in the spirit of Shabbos.

The permissibility of such an app is a completely different thing.

Additionally, there are times when it's halachicly ok to make some use of a phone on Shabbos (for doctors, patients' and their families in the case of medical emergencies, and the like) so this might be a better alternative.

The same criticism was used for Shabbos timers...

Perhaps one thought to reflect upon before passing judgement would be the possibility of this app bringing more Jews into the fold. How many semi observant Jews would be more observant if not for their phone being used on Shabbos? How many Jews have elderly parents or teenagers and the stress and worry of their well being takes away from their neshama yesaira? How many Jews feel that orthodoxy is old fashioned and antiquated and crave their religion to grow with the times?

The attitude of "its shver tzu zein a yid" that this app so beautiful portrays, is the only thing causing people to leave the fold. This attitude is more treif than all the bacon in the world.
They think that they are being innovative.  "If only yiddishkeit was easier, less restrictive, more inclusive... "  Its the same regurgitated crap they've been selling since the enlightenment.. Guess what, the unchanged yeshiva people or chassidim are the ones that are growing by leaps and bounds. The open-reform-conserva-modern-feminista-doxes will be relegated to the garbage heaps of history.
/Rant! :)

first of all this person is ignorant in halacha because he is just trying to make the problems simple for which he has a simple solution. but anyway this is so sad!! what has this world come to? even for a joke this is very sad. :(

You're more than welcome to post what halachik issue you think he missed.
But just to post a comment without substance like this one is like being Christian without believing in Jesus.

You make no sense.
Love me or hate me. I still love you.

I love your analogies...

A few problems were brought upthread but as I was eating supper another one came to me:
Quote
Screen: Turning the screen on and off is similar to turning a regular light on and off  - this can be a potential prohibition of making a fire (aish) according to some opinions...

The app forces the screen to stay on the entire time (you can preset the brightness for when the app is active), which inhibits any problems of turning the screen on and off.
Every time you cause a pixel to change color (every time you change anything on the screen) you are either turning on a pixel, turning off a pixel and/or changing the brightness on a pixel. multiply that by thousands of pixels every time you swipe your screen...

P.S. I loved the Am Haratzus of calling the Melachah of making a fire Aish...

A sheretz can also be muttar for a hundred reasons..
IMHO Since they have an agenda to be matir a smart phone on shabbos, all halachic arguments are a complete waste of time.
They are starting with the premises that GD never intended to cause us inconveniences...

Remindes me of one of my father's customers, she's told my father that she keeps Shabbos but if a light goes off she'll turn it on; "GD doesn't want me to sit in the dark"..., nebech..

Never mind the ridiculousness of a G-d that bends to the will and whims of humans- it's only a short ride from there to G-d doesn't want me to fast if I'm hungry on Yom Kippur, and G-d doesn't want me to be lonely if I'm in love with a non-jew, and G-d just wants me to be happy no matter what gender partner I choose.
