Paying for a domestic upgrade
« on: November 29, 2010, 11:55:15 PM »
If one has a paid ticket on AA for example, and wants to upgrade to first (does not have status), can he pay for that upgrade? What does something like that cost if it exists? Would that entitle him to check bags for free?

As far as I know the only official way to upgrade would be to use 15,000 miles plus $75 co-pay. If C class inventory is available then they will confirm you otherwise you must waitlist. Oh btw if its less then 21 days in or 7 then you will have to also pay an expedite fee of $50 or $100 if you are not an elite member.

Another option is to use eVIPs which would not have those fees but are generally worth much more.

Personally, unless I would be flying a transcon on a 767 it is not worth the money all other domestic F is a real joke.

To revisit this topic, i am trying to figure out a way to book a cheap domestic fare and then pay for an upgrade using my amex plat (and get the upgrade fee back as a statement credit).

Do different airlines have different polices regarding this? Does it depend on status? Can it be done 2 weeks in advance?
Im looking to do this on either AA, UA, or DL. The only status i have is my BMI silver.
