To each their own when it comes to lights. 
The colored ones def scream Christmas in my head.  I've seen the white ones used really nice where that's not the first thing I think of.
I personally have had rope lights a few times.

Its all what you personally feel about it, being that none of us celebrate X-mas i dont see the problem with making your Sukkah beautiful to enhance your Mitzvah.
