wrong name on ticket
« on: September 29, 2014, 11:35:28 PM »
A friend of mine has a ticket for this Wed on Austrian Air and had his name spelled with 'ie' instead of 'ei'. Its a flight to Israel. Any advice?

Officially up to 3 letters being wrong is ok, however he can call the airline and ask them to fix it, many times they will accommodate these requests.

they usually do not change it, they only enter a note on the ticket.

Called more then a dozen times... no answer. and thats after a 2 hour hold.

I guess he'll just give it a try. After all he has no other choice.

On another note, it was the TA that made the mistake.... hope this doesnt get sticky.

Depends on the rep. I've had a ticket reissued for as little as Rochel -> Rachel

Without. They know it isn't a name change if it's only a letter or 2 and I told them it was their mistake :)

Probably too late for this ticket (op said it's for a flight on Wednesday), but if the TA made a mistake, it should be their problem to have it corrected.

In regards to a wrong or misspelled name on any ticket, there is never a definite answer as to what can be done. Different airlines have different policies, a travel agent as your advocate can sometimes get an exception made, or it might be the person that you are talking to which makes all the difference.

When booking a ticket, it is vital you look over the booking and ticket several times. Within 24 hours of ticket issuance, you will almost never have an issue getting the name changed. If you are booking through a travel agent, look over the booking before the ticket is issued, and look at it again after the ticket is issued as well. The sooner a mistake is noticed, the easier time you will have in getting the situation rectified.

If you do notice that the name on the ticket is misspelled, the first thing to do is update the Secure Flight Information (NAME, DOB, PASSPORT NUMBER) right away. That can be done at any time. If your name is spelled correctly in that field and security checks clear, it is highly unlikely you will be denied boarding. Call the airline as well and have your name documented in your record and ask for the name to be changed to the correct spelling. Some airlines allow the call takers to do it themselves, some need to call their help desk for assistance, and with some airlines and/or situations the passenger needs to show up at the airport with additional documentation, such as a birth certificate. Be calm, thorough, and don't get nervous. The vast majority of these situations are resolved positively.

There is never one answer to this kind of situation.

What if the name says "Abe" but it's actually "Jim"

Highly unlikely to be changed unless you legal and alias names got mixed up, and can be supported with documentation. In the scenario you provided, you are not changing letters around in a name, but changing an entire name.

There is no airline where 3 letters wrong is ok. There are different procedures to follow based on how many letters are wrong and who can actually process a change.

That is a very common mistake and almost never an issue. However, don't assume everything will be ok. Make sure you call and have your record documented.
