If you have an hp 8610 printer DO NOT upgrade yet.

To save yourself frustration, don't upgrade to Win10 yet. Too many issues.

To upgrade to Windows 10:

Quote
GXN is a small utility that helps you upgrade your current Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 Preview installation to Windows 10 RTM without any waiting or reservation.

This tool provides a few enhancements over the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft. As an example, GXN is able to identify and clean up temporary files from previous failed installation attempts, thus lowering the chance of setup not working significantly. GXN will continue receiving updates for the app itself and will always provide the most up-to-date copy of Windows 10 Microsoft offers.

These are the following prerequisites you need for GXN to work properly:

.NET Framework 4.5
Windows 7 or newer
An active internet connection
Administrator rights
Please report any bugs you've found using DMs on Twitter, @Whistler4Ever.

If you want to install Windows 10 on a computer that does not have an internet connection, use this:

My friend just got a new computer - windows 8. Does it pay to wait a couple of days before installing programs and copying over files?

thanks
its an upgrade not a new install

+1 Programs stay the same, and it asks you if you want to backup files which are saved into a folder "Old Windows".

Although it is true that it is an upgrade, I would recommend doing a clean install (which you can only do after upgrade).  If you can wait the extra day or two, that's what I would do personally.  But what they answered is correct, you do not need to wait.

Just in case people are interested, here's the deal with Windows 10 clean install:

You must do an upgrade first. Upgrade registers your hardware with Microsoft, MS then marks it as genuine hardware for Win10 install.  After upgrading, you can then do a clean install, and as long as you haven't changed your motherboard, the activation should re-process through MS (you won't need to do anything).

IIRC when I did that they recommended backing up files just in case. Though I didn't need to use the backup BH.

+sh = system and hidden file attribute :)

nothing to do.. it will download the install.esd plus zdp and whatever.. will range from 2.2gb to 5.5gb.  windows will notify you when upgrade is ready.

very tired so im keeping this short

it's been verified that sha1 hashes of files from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10iso
are equal to MSDN (multiple editions).

you can also use the tool from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

regarding activating win 10.  first rule is that no iso will activate from a clean install unless it was first upgraded.  when you run upgrade process it registers your hardware id to microsoft. once that happens. you can clean install as many times as you'd like, and it will activate after to connecting to ms servers.  as of now it is activating for people using daz loader as well as kms activation.  the forecast is that they will both continue to work. the daz loader method is slightly more guaranteed.

how to upgrade:
reserve your upgrade.  should be availbale after running windows update. if you're having issues, try this - make sure all windows updates are installed. make sure windows update is set to automatic.  then do this (its one or two commands) - https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3exx29/preload_windows_10_if_you_dont_have_the_folder/
2nd method.  download ISO from one of above links. mount and then run upgrade from ISO.

remember, if  you do not do upgrade, you will not receive win10 activation.

also, reminder, look at this -- http://i.imgur.com/RUQewKw.jpg

edit:
Sorry I wasn't clear about daz vs kms.
what i mean is that as of now, microsoft is allowing daz and kms activated win 7 and win 8.1 to be eligible for free win 10 activation.  most opinions are that it will stay that way.  some are in doubt in regards to kms.

I just clicked yes to the upgrade by mistake (in the middle of typing when it popped up) - I hope I can remember what I was in the middle of doing when it finishes :)

At 18% now...
