Just 2500 SPG Points For a Domestic Trip On UA, AA or US!

The cost to experiment with this is quite low for a frequent traveller. If it works it would certainly be worthwhile to keep a token amount of miles in their program.

Besides - everybody loves star points and they take forever to transfer. Availability certainly changes during that transfer process.

Wake me up when someone actually manages to get something booked.

I have used it a couple of times to book a DFW-LAX return for 5000 miles and INR 3600, approx $60. From the first mail which asked for the passport copy of the passenger, to which I replied with the passport copy and specifically asking for particular UA flights, in less than 24 hours I get a reply from the Jet Privilege Redemption team about the flights being available and the tax of 3600 Indian Rupees. Once I give them a go ahead, the Jet Privilege team called on my number listed in the profile to collect the taxes amount. All in all in took me less than 3 days from the initial online form submission to get it ticketed.

The taxes which UA charges them. I did try to check with the phone representative, but he had no clue about the tax breakdown

No, on BA/AA.
IMHO, I'd rather use 4500 BA + $5, than 2500 SPG + $60. (Without even getting into the convenience aspect.)
I would think it goes without saying that is there is no AA availability, than I would not be the liberty to make this choice.

Obviously if you have status with United, the schedule is more convenient for you, etc etc. you should definitely factor that into your decision, but all things being equal this is not necessarily the best deal for <649 miles.
