Flight Overbooked
« on: October 06, 2014, 08:01:11 PM »
I called up AA bec I could not select seats in business class. They said bec it's overbooked they can't give me a seat. Now I am nervous bec I'm taking the last flight of the day from pHl to lax for yom tov. Any pointers or idea what happens when bussiness is overbooked?

You (or another pax) may be downgraded based on priority/fare class/ time of check-in and offered compensation. If the flight is oversold entirely, they may seek volunteers.

Would you schedule work with the previous flight? Call on the morning and ask to go earlier because business class is oversold
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

Might just me an incompetent rep. The airline releases a number amount of seats to chose from, they keep some seats for the airport. You tried to see online if they will still let you buy a ticket on that flight in J?

It might indeed be oversold Im just saying that just because you can't select a seat does not mean that you are overbooked.

+1 I had a flight to LHR last year which was NOT overbooked, but I wasn't able to select seats until day of departure. Not sure what it is, but there was definitely empty seats in business on that flight.

There is still at least one seat left for sale. Take a breath.

They oversell seats+ take volunteers before the flight if need be before they bump anybody. The earlier you check in at the airport , the better the chance you will not get bumped, as you will be the first to clear once the checkin deadline for the flight passes. Also, if someone volunteers (sometimes they ask people at check in), you'll immediately be assigned their seat.

What does that prove? Don't they overbook flights?

They absolutely do. Availability in the GDS means absolutely nothing. The only way you would know if a flight is overbooked is by speaking to the airline.

Airlines overbook flights not just by 1 or 2 seats. They overbook by a lot.

This is a Transcon flight on a Peak travel Date.

Even a small domestic J cabin?

I once saw seats for sale in the GDS and the flight was clearly overbooked as they were at that same time offering vouchers to be bumped

Saw this with the DL flights this week to Tel Aviv. All over booked and had about 20-30 seats for sale in GDS several hours prior to departure. I was checking-in customers and they were being offered vouchers to get bumped.
so....  ;)

Yup, especially on a Transcon. Transcon's are treated like long-hauls when it comes to inventory and revenue management, upgrades (varies on the airline), and more.
