Since October 12, 2015, the prepaid REDcard (Redbird) can only be loaded at Target with cash. It can still be loaded online with a bank-issued debit card, up to $200/day and $1K/month.

Therefore, for MS (manufactured spending) Redbird is now considered dead. RIP!

I have a RedCard. I plan to go out and buy a bunch of Visa gift cards to meet spending.

How do I get the cash out of these gift cards using the RedCard and do I need to physically go to a Target at any time?

No need to go to Target, you can do it all from Twitter, double points with Amex credit cards if you follow Kim Kardashian.

J/k, you do need to go to Target o load the pin-based gift cards to Redbird. You can take cash out of Redbird at the Target ATM for no fee, but try to keep cash via ATM or withdrawing to checking at a minimum, the best way to unload it without attracting much attention is to pay bills, credit card or other bills.  Also use Redbird for a few random purchases at stores, even if they are small amounts; self-checkout lanes are helpful for that so you can do your own split payments.

-1. Pure speculation. No one has ever been shut down for "not using the card as intended". There are no valid reports. period. Pretty much everyone on the boards have been doing that since November 2014 with no issues. Please specify when you are speculating based on your own thinking and when you are actually basing it on real facts.

Data point: I no longer have Serve and never had a RC. I have not run into any problems.  :)
I ran into problems with my AFT, it's not so much fun anymore...

I hope it doesn't sound condescending, but this thread would benefit from a more mature tone. For instance, you can agree or disagree with someone, but don't bark at them, like you're doing at my comment.

Firstly, I didn't say anywhere "not using as intended" much less in quotations.

Secondly, I didn't say whether anyone has or hasn't been shut down, I didn't present my comment as a certified document. MS is not chemical experiments, so not every advise people give is based on exact formulas that can be reproduced in labs.

Thirdly, there have been a couple of credible reports (as far as I am concerned) of shut downs, on other forums, and while no one knows for sure what the reason was (Amex didn't tell them) from asking what they had done recently, the thing they both had in common was withdrawing money to their checking account.

I'm doing it when you are saying things without couching them as speculation. Your giving bad advice. Why should someone walk around with extra cash when they can just transfer to checking? As soon as someone is shut down for that I'll eat my hat but until then the fear mongering needs to stop.
