i'm just trying to wrap my head around how one would take something that is marked $5 out of a store and say "oh, I'll pay for it when i activate it elsewhere". If any item has a price marked on it, why would it even dawn on me to take it without paying? Can i take anything else out of the store thats marked with a price and say I'll pay for it elsewhere? It just doesnt make sense. The card costs $5, not the activation. Try to take a chocolate bar right under the RedCard display and see if they let you pay for it when you activate it.
I never heard of activating a chocolate bar. A redcard is worthless without activating. There is no way to be able to use it without activating it and paying the fee. It doesn't matter which location you do it in, Target will get their $5.
Of course it's the activation which costs $5. Why on earth would they sell a worthless piece of paper and plastic for $5?
Can you take an Amex GC, MC or VGC without activating it?
I personally wouldn't without asking. I have asked employees about taking redcards (albeit free ones) to activate elsewhere, and I have been given permission.
However, technically, there isn't much of a difference. GCs are also worthless until activated. The only difference might be that since those are more generic and can be activated in a different chain, the chain you took it from could lose the activation fee.
Can you take VRs without activating them? I know many people have. There was a discussion about it here back in the day, and IIRC the consensus from most people was that the only reason it's wrong is since there's a limited number of cards, you're causing the next guy to lose out. That's not really relevant here.
