Since October 12, 2015, the prepaid REDcard (Redbird) can only be loaded at Target with cash. It can still be loaded online with a bank-issued debit card, up to $200/day and $1K/month.

Therefore, for MS (manufactured spending) Redbird is now considered dead. RIP!

Every time you load make sure that:

1) The Target receipt reflects the load/transaction and the new balance. If you do multiple loads at once look at all receipts.

2) Within minutes you received the automated email from REDcard confirming the loading transaction.

If you want to double-check, after an hour or so login to Redbird online to verify the load transaction is still there, shouldn't have to do this every time (I don't).

If there's issues loading Redbird, they're usually one of these two types:

a) REDcard network issue: Either the load won't go through (won't show on receipt or online) or it won't stay, meaning it will instantly show online a +$500 (for instance) and a -$500 loading reversal. Many of us had the load reversal back in late Feb - early March (2015) when Redbird was having issues. It was corrected manually by Amex reps, it took some time and one or several calls.

b) Gift card network issue: The money won't go to Redbird, it might debit from the gift card and auto-credit back to it in a few hours.

Either way keep all receipts for at least a month to be sure, this way you don't have to double check each transaction. Also keep the gift cards and the gift card package showing the bar code (if Vanilla) for at least a month. You can get your money back if you have both.

P.S. If you need to buy the Redbird online you can do so instantly at www.NoonRadar.com.
Are you advising to keep the receipts and vgc all the time or only when you notice issues?
Are you seriously selling redcards for $25??? They go for $10 on GFS

I heard that recently target store cashiers don't let reloading with GC's. Is this true?

All the time. I keep mine at least a month then discard them afterwords. That way I spend less time overall and no worries on lost money if something happens.

I was selling them for $10 up to a few days ago also, then it got really difficult to activate them, not only do I have to travel to towns nearby, but still often times I come empty handed. Its a cost benefit analysis basically, currently can't afford to sell them for less. If I can easily activate them again, I will adjust the price accordingly.

Just curious, what changed as far as activation?

So basically once the receipt shows $500 added (which I always check) the only way for the money to be missing would be if it showed -$500 online?

Yes. Once it shows on the receipt and online (you get the email confirming the load) it is pretty much there, except for the rare cases when they have Redbird network issues and reverses the load with a negative amount.

Just curious, what changed as far as activation?

New POS registers work fine for loading permanent Redbirds but are a biatch to activate temp ones (at least so far), freeze in the middle of the process, then supervisors/managers are called to help and reboot the machine, which takes some time as customers are often backed up (then new cashiers are called to help) your face becomes even more known to them and they start limiting you, you then have to travel further, etc.

What does it mean when "people have a problem with a load"? It's been mentioned in this thread a few times, but what exactly happens? The reason I ask is because I don't double check once I load a card to make sure the money is there, I just assume it is. Am I trusting redcard/amex too much? Can the transaction really go through on my end, yet the money doesn't get added to the redcard?
That is not the issue people have had.

Actually I did have a problem like this.  Receipt said money was loaded but available balance was N/A but a little slip of paper came out of the register that said we're sorry your money could not be loaded. Received the email that the money was loaded but when I looked online the money wasn't there and it was no longer on the GC.  Was a big hassle to finally get the money loaded.
