Since October 12, 2015, the prepaid REDcard (Redbird) can only be loaded at Target with cash. It can still be loaded online with a bank-issued debit card, up to $200/day and $1K/month.

Therefore, for MS (manufactured spending) Redbird is now considered dead. RIP!

Yes, that was the problem. The CSR said (erroneously?) that I couldn't use wife's info on a temporary card registered to me. (And I can't just yet dump my own Blue Bird.)

I'm confused, if someone is getting one from another state, best to get it unactivated or anything or temp activate?

This will sound irrational, I'm sure, but...
I wanted to hang on to my BB for a little while, because I like the check writing. My wife's BB card always seems much buggier when loading GCs in the Walmart ATMs, so I decided to dump her BB account instead of mine.

Huh. Didn't know people used it for the real purpose. I thought everyone just cashed them used them to pay CC and write checks from regular bank. go figure.

I have been of the mind that it's "safer" (less likely to raise BB or CC eyebrows) to pay a non-CC bill than a CC bill with BB. The BB wiki implies that:

"On the BB site, money can be sent to pay bills that don't normally accept CCs (think rent/mortgage, tuition, insurance, car payment, gas bill, even pay your cc bill) or to anyone in the U.S. for free. Use the 'pay and transfer tab'.  Checks sent online this way are delivered within 5 business days. (It may be prudent not to use BB to directly pay the CC on which you purchased the VRs/GCs that funded BB, but, once again, YMMV.)"

Based on everything I've read in this thread it seems you are better trying to get one that is unactivated if you can.

that may not be possible -
I'm on hold now with the 24 hr cs guy in India and he's saying that this card cannot be activated if not done in the store.

I still had the bb card while in Target yesterday, so Redcard didn't go through - but they gave me a new card to bring home and try after I cancelled my bb..

As far as I understand you DO have to activate in a store, but it doesn't have to be in the same store you picked it up from. Again I haven't done any of this but based on what I've read in this thread that was my understanding.

Also, iinm, you can buy and activate in store,  then cancel bb, then register at home

Agree - I was responding to this where he says it's better unactivated:

the cs guy is insisting there there is no such thing as a $0 purchase price and that it has to be paid for and activated first in Target up to $500 and then register for permanent card.
It can be loaded up to $1500 for the temp card and he says it can be loaded with cash for up to $100K/yr with the perm card.

When I said it's better to get it unactivated it was in response to the question:

My point was that when getting one from a different state it's better to get it unactivated and then go to your local target and activate it yourself.

yes to activate it has to be in a Target (bb can be done online).  prob has to be in a participating target.

Again I've never done it but I read in this thread that somoene was able to activate it in a Target in NJ (so a non participating one). That's why it makes sense for someone to pick one up in a participating target for you (unactivated) and then you can take care of the rest yourself.

+1
Many reports are that ANY target can activate it. Even those that do not sell the cards themselves.
