That's a slow & torturous way to go through it.

Can we either delete this thread or move into JS? Preferably the former.  ::) :P

Who is willing to plan an awesome trip out for him, save him tens/hundreds of thousands of points for a percentage?  Or perhaps for all the points that you save him?

I have struggled with the same question, on a much smaller scale. For people that don't/can't travel often (stuck at home with X # of kids) I don't see any practical use for the points other than selling them to a broker.

It's still a lucrative hobby, but you don't get nearly the value that you could if you were using them to fly last minute business class seats.

Why does having a number of kids mean you need to be stuck at home 365 days a year?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Everyone's situation is different. I don't feel the need to take a family vacation every year and don't have anywhere to dump four kids for a quiet three-four day vacation (nor would I necessarily want to).

And even if I would want to travel, it seems like the biggest benefit is on the last minute business class type of deals. I am fine flying coach and I definitely am not going to be booking last minute. If I'm going on a vacation with four kids (or leaving them with family) I am planning weeks or months in advance.

Maybe so, but I think the deals that are highlighted on DDF are for extravagant hotels that a normal person wouldn't spend the money on.

For example, in Yehudas post he talks about staying in a hotel room that would normally cost him $1,000. I don't know what value he got and what points he was using but for arguments sake let's say the points were worth 1.4 on the open market and he got 4.0 by spending it on the hotel. So he spent 25,000 points which on the open market is worth $350. I wouldn't pay $350 for a hotel room - would rather go to a nice clean hilton for $200 and pocket the extra $150 per night.

+1, just last minute flights are usually more expensive so you would be getting a better cpm.

My original (and main) point - I don't travel much and don't have the use for points to spend on hotels and flights (whether last minute or not, coach or business class).

thats a whole different story. But there are also many times where even for just a decent clean hotel using points can save you money. Also yes it may make more sense to sell the miles and buy a flight if you dont want to splurge on business class, and no one is saying otherwise. For some people the best way to use the points is absolutely selling them, does that mean its not lucrative? not at all. I know ppl who play this game just to earn some extra income and there is nothing wrong with that.

Agree. That's what I do and I have no reason not to - If I am spending the $5K anyways why not make the $500-$1,000 by selling the rewards? It's free money.

For me, it comes down to a very simple realization:

In 5, 10, and certainly 20 years... what will I remember more, what will leave the most lasting impression? The extra $1500 in my pocket from selling my 100K AmEx offer, or flying Singapore Suites with my eishes chayil on a trip to New Zealand?

Res ipsa loquitur.
