A store was selling a bat and a ball together for one dollar and ten cents if the bat costed 1 dollar more than the ball then how much did the ball cost?

Code: [Select]
x + (x + 1) = $1.10
2x + 1 = 1.1
2x = .1
x = .05
5 cents

A famous riddle may have been asked before.  Three guys walk into a hotel and ask for a room for the night the hotel representative says it cost $30 for the three of them so they each pull out $10 and hand it to the representative after they go to their room the representative of the hotel realizes there was a sale and it only costed $25 so he calls over a hotel employee and gives him $5 and tells him to give it back to those three guys the employee takes the $5 and heads to the room on the way to their room the employee decides to keep two and only give them back three since $5 cannot be split evenly among 3 people so in the end each guy got back $1 that means they each paid $9 9 times the three of them is 27 plus the two that the employee stole is 29 what happened to the 30th dollar

That's what I thought originally. But after seeing people saying two, I realized they're right. It's simply subtracting the total spent (7+9=16) from the total earned.(8+10=18) equaling 2.

Then came the hardest part, trying to understand why I made the mistake to begin with.

You don't lose a dollar when you buy it for 9, the 8 paid you back for the 7 plus

If I've heard it before should I give the answer, or give everyone a chance?

Yes I remember that being the answer. But the important part is not to listen to whoever you ask. It's a famous riddle.

Each paid9 and the employee had 2 dollars. Makes 25. The 2 is supposed to be subtracted not added

They each paid $9 so that's $27, of that $27 $2 went to the rep and $25 went to the hotel.

In other words, they paid $27 for the room and the remaining $3 (of the $30) went back to them.
