If it doesn't balance you replace one of the current groups with the 3rd group. Lets say you take the lighter 3 off, if it balances now you know one of the first 3 is lighter but if the heavier one is still heavier you know one of those three is heavier.

Why do you need this step?

Why do you need this step?
If one is heavier then weigh two of the heavier group. If they are equal weigh two of the unweighed group. If one is heavier then you have it if not then the unweighed one is it. Not sure why you would need a third time.
You need to figure out if the odd one is heavier or lighter

Why do you need this step?
You not only need to find the odd ball but also if it is heavier or lighter. That is why 4/4 will not work.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

If the first weighing is equal there are two ways to go from there. You can weigh two new marbles against each other and then one of those against the third one. Alternatively you can weigh all three new ones against any three old ones then weigh any two of the new ones against each other.

If you want a much harder riddle try the same thing with 12 marbles. You still need to determine whether the odd one is heavier or lighter and you still get only 3 weighings.

So it is harder to google the answer for 12 than 9?  :)

An oldie but Goodie:

In front of you are 9 marbles and a balance (a scale that has two sides where you can weigh one side against the other). The marbles are all of identical size, and 8 of the 9 have an identical weight.

Using the balance, you need to find the odd-weight marble, and identify if it is heavier or lighter than the other 8 - but you can only use the balance 3 times.

How do you do it?

The solution, succinctly:

1. Split the 9 marbles into 3 groups of 3, call them A,B, and C
2. Weigh A vs B
3a. If A = B, the odd marble is in group C, Then weigh the three marbles in the group against each other, two will be equal, and you will know which is the odd one out, and if it's lighter or heavier.
3b. If A > B, then weigh A vs C; If A > C, you know that group A contains the marble, and it's heavier.  If A = C, then group B contains the Marble and you know that the odd marble is lighter.
4. (Only if A<>B) - weigh two of the marbles in the "Odd" group, if they're equal, you know that the third marble is the odd one, and you've already established if it's lighter or heavier. If they're not equal, then the one on the side you've established is the odd one out.

Here’s a interesting one,

There was a king that wanted to refill his collection of gold, so he ordered from 10 different companies an order of 10 gold bricks each, each brick weighed 10 pounds.

Somehow he figured out that one company defrauded him and sent him 10 bricks that weighed only 9.9 pounds, though, they all looked and feel exactly the same and it’s impossible to notice anything.

He wanted to challenge his Jewish financial advisor so he called him in and told him, listen, I’m giving you a digital scale and you can place how many bricks you want on it and I want you to tell me which company sent the lighter bricks,

but,
you can only use the scale once

Can you help him?

Jewish financial adviser uses his extensive networking skills to make a friend in each company and get inside information on who was cheating the king.

Scale is digital, so you need to turn it on first at 0 and then add bricks to get weight.
So yes, you can only use it once, but it’s already on. And since gold bricks are heavy (even if only 10 pounds), you start stacking them on top of each other on the “on” scale. As soon as the weight is off you have your answer.

How much weight can the scale hold?
This will be easier if you keep the bricks grouped by supplier until this is done.
