Is it possible to get away with doing this?

Upgrade my current Delta Gold Amex to Amex Plat
Cancel after a month or so (pay the prorated charge)
Revert back to Delta Gold (I know skypesos are worthless) or downgrade to anoth Amex

Use the cancelled Amex Plat for lounges.

Not asking about the ethical-ness of this. Just asking, hypothetically, would one be able to pull it off?
I don't think they'll let you upgrade the delta card to the amex plat.
You can always just apply for the amex plat and cancel within 30 days though.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

applied and instantly got approved.. thanks for the input dan... now if i decide to cancel within 30 days, there will be no charge, correct?

and the card *should* work still for lounges? any other perks with a cancelled card?

If you cancel within 30 days you will not get the points. Better wait till you get the points and then get a prorated charge.

My experience in signing up for (and canceling) this card:
It takes 4-6 weeks from the eligible spend to receive points. In my case, bec. my 1st order was from the mint and it got backordered, they were billing me for the $450 waay before I got the points. On the first bill they had the charge for fee, and I called and said I'm considering cancelling so I don't want to have to pay the fee only to have it refunded in a few days when I cancel. They told me that the date it 'says' my bill is due is not the 'real' date it is owed by and as long as I pay within 30 days of due date there would be no problems. When those 30 days were ending and points still didn't post I had to pay the full fee and I figured I would get a prorated refund. When I finally got my points and called to cancel they said if I would have called one day earlier (Within 60 days of bill due date) I would have gotten a full refund but that now they would withold $75 of my payment and refund the rest. A quick chat with a supervisor took care of that and I got a full refund!!

I might be interested in the next split PLAT opportunity/offer that comes up here.

Q. You also get SPG Gold from the PLAT. Does each addtional cardholder also get that benefit ?
If so, do you retain SPG Gold after the card is cancelled ?

Probably whoever applies for the card and takes the credit hit and is responsible for the account.

What about MR points for spending? Or would those chipping in only get a card once the account is cancelled?

IMO, that seems a little steep for the hit.
I'm willing to take 10K MR and not spend on the card.

Considering that anyone can sign up, spend $1,000, get the 50K points, and cancel the card and get back most of (or the entire) annual fee.  It seems more of a favor to other people for 4 years of lounge access.

How much are people willing to pay for an (inactive) Amex platinum card with their name on it? If I get four $50 offers I'll apply.

A favor? by charging $155 and not even paying it to AMEX and just pocketing the cash?
