I've never heard of an official number for AMEX.

I've had Amex reps tell me that I can't have more than 4, therfore they have to deny my application.

Sounds like someone ought to apply for it, get the 25K miles, sell additional cards at $200 each, cancel the cards and get a prorated refund (for the main card and the additionals) and make a nice profit with a nice bundle of miles.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

If you cancel then how will you get into the lounges?

as dan mentioned earlier, they swype the card but they dont look to check if the accts open.

with a deactivated card, are there any other benefits except the airport lounge access?

I don't think that is very ethical. I think it is better to ask someone to guest you in than steal your way in.

Neither method is terribly ethical.

But let me ask you this, what if you pay the $450 for the AMEX for the year and get the 25K miles and close it after the year.
Is it wrong to use it then?  Does it say somewhere that once you cancel the card you're not allowed to access the lounges? No.  All it say is that with the card you can access lounges (at least until the card's 4 year expiration date.

Definitely no possibility of C"H as nobody even knows its canceled as opposed to panhandling at the entrance of the lounge for free entry which is likely to offend many people.

Personally I enjoy lounges enough to have invested in a lifetime membership years ago, but for everyone else they'll have to decide for themselves...

Well Said.

Is there any official or unofficial number of Amex cards one can safely have open at the same time? I'm at 4 right now. Just wondering what'll happen if I get the plat too (the DD way..).

i currently have more than 4...

I don't think there's a general hard limit.  At one point I must have had 15 AMEX's.

Is it possible to get away with doing this?

Upgrade my current Delta Gold Amex to Amex Plat
Cancel after a month or so (pay the prorated charge)
Revert back to Delta Gold (I know skypesos are worthless) or downgrade to anoth Amex

Use the cancelled Amex Plat for lounges.

Not asking about the ethical-ness of this. Just asking, hypothetically, would one be able to pull it off?
