I do not find it extreme, we are talking about being moser nefesh for torah.

Sadly these days few people are really moser nefesh :(
I don't know how you can say that. And I'm surprised nobody called you out on that yet.

Despise the way this thread is going.. Yes we have to make a budget of our expenses, but there has to be a tzimtzum on that too. Starting to count up every single thing you order down to the cents, is completely ridiculous. Will you resent have orchim over? Because you will have to buy an extra piece of chicken and two more cucumbers and you will to serve a little more fish? May hashem bentch all of us, not to have to deal with this nisayon.
Well said. Isn't also brought down that if you nitpick too much Hashem can't help as much with the totals...

Some people have no choice. They don't have a spare penny or they're in the red.

the op was looking for a frugal budget. I have no problem if you have kiseudas shlomo bshaato but if you are trying to stick to a low budget and figure out the minimum to get by you need to know what the minimum is and then figure out where to spend any extra you may have.

What about the cloths and shoes budget? That's where many need some serious restraint imo

:) Excellent. Or $2.79 at KRM and NPGS. (DoGo said that he was charged $2.50.)

Now we know that their Shabbos menu is complete. Need dessert included.
They can melt and dip marshmallows, roasted almonds, dried cranberries, etc..... and still have plenty for lunch/snack during the work/Kollel week.

A great way to save money on food, is to buy a big freezer. This way your wife can make kugel once for the next 2 months etc. etc. and save you on takeout costs.

Or you can just bake fresh Kugel every week  :)

OP's wife is a teacher. She may not have time on Th./F to make all fresh soup, sides, salads, dips, fish, main/meat, chicken, desserts...  Time = money.
Some people prefer fresh each week, and some bake 10-20 challahs and then freeze. Desserts freeze well, too.
(Can be cheaper that way when buying 25 lb bags of flour, sugar, etc...)

I would say a big freezer is better for buying meat or chicken on sale or with a chosson / kallah discount and freezing it.

And waste tons of time and effort... time is money, and effort expended making kugel means less strength for taking care of the children.
Tip for life - make your wife's life easier, and give your children a great mother.

Agreed. Freezers work well for Shana Rishona, as well as invitations for meals out. Still a tight $120/wk food budget for the OP.

Great for that too, we use 3/4 of our freezer for chicken and meat. Also chicken soup freezes well too with broth only.

The conversation can be expanded beyond the limits of the OPs circumstances.
