Not enough info:

* Do you ever carry a balance?

* Do you travel often?

* How much do you spend a Month and what are your highest spending categories (e.g. gas, dining, grocery, travel etc.)?

Your answers to these questions (and possibly others), will help determine the best card for YOU.

I do not travel that much, I would like to use it mostly for groceries and basic family necessities, not gas as I have the AE simply cash for that with 5% back.  I never carry any balances and I would probably put on bet. $500-$1000 monthly

Chase freedom gives 3% on the top 3 categories from a list of 15. If you're a Chase checking account holder its 5 categories. the rest gets 1% flat. Fidelity Investments has one which gives 1.5% flat. It may only be for account holders, but they happen to have a high rate for checking. Currently over 3%.
Just because things turned out a certain way doesn't mean you were right.

Chase freedom would be a great option for you. Unless you prefer a mileage card, which wouldn't make much sense for you (at your current spending level).
