Sold miles, broker never used them, what's their status?

Wonder how all you yeshivish ganovim would react when the broker failed to pay because 'you can't sell miles'

That's absolutely a good idea.

This is a business that is based on trust, but signing a deal is always a good idea regardless. Personally I only sell to ppl who will take out all the miles immediately.

No, I never referred to the Lakewood population as dishonest. I merely pointed out that this breed of lomdish stealing doesn't really exist anywhere else. That does not connote it is prevalent in Lakewood.

I'm sure most of Lakewoods residents are truly moiser nefesh for toirah and I am very jealous of them for thatS

If anyone is interested in a follow-up, I finally got around to asking my Rav about this issue. I won't mention his name, but he's one of the leading Litvish English-speaking Rabbonim in Eretz Yisroel. I asked about who owns the miles now, whether I can ever use them, and whether I can borrow them with the intention of replacing them (via sign-up bonus) if they are needed. His reply is below; in the meantime, the miles still have not been used by the non-Jewish broker who purchased them from the Jewish broker to whom I sold them.

The miles could only be used if they are about to expire OR with the permission of the broker. They are not yours and could only be used when they become zuto shel yam. Replacing them is only an option if they will be available immediately should  the non Jewish broker request them.

Because there's no National Association of Mileage Brokers (also known as the NAMB) that makes guidelines for brokers.

Everyone can be a broker - including you and me. It just takes spending $50 to advertise in a local paper.

Yes, while there are no formal rules set in stone.  There is minhag hasochrim which has both legal and halachic validity.

If you sell the miles regardless of how long it takes the buyer to use them they are not yours.  Plain and simple.
