whats best way to book nyc-lhr in y with points/miles?

If off peak then AA otherwise AA, UA, etc are all around the same amount. With AA though if you fly BA you'll hit fuel fees.

In economy? AA off peak, or BA other times.
Awful availability recently.

Is there a way to avoid paying for checked luggage when booking JFK-CUN AA direct flight with BA?

Use an AA credit card.
1. With AA you don't have to use the CC to get the free bag. As long as your FFN is tied to the ressy, you're good.
2. I believe you don't get a free bag on this route as it's not domestic.

Exactly. It is an international flight and AA c/c benefit of one free bag is only for domestic flights. I actually thought the 1st bag is always free on international flights regardless if you have any status or credit card :(
Are there at least any discounts for checked in luggage?

In general: with cc or without. My Q is if there is a way to avoid paying for a 1st checked in luggage on that JFK- CUN AA flight or at least paying a discounted price.

i feel like this is one of the threads I'm learning the most from. A bunch of questions seem to have been asked a few times. Anyone have the time to wikify some of them?

I can confirm that both ways would cost $25 per suitcase

It's true that it would require updating, but I feel like information that is somewhat outdated is better than no information.
