Iraq is no small country, I wasn't able to cover everything in one trip.

Traveling through Iraq is not easy, no driver or taxi would drive you into the night, and roadblocks all over the place, and if you're really luck, you'd bump in to spontaneous Al Qaida or IS checkpoints.

Yecheskal is definitely high on my bucket list though.

Thanks, Hershel.  Really amazing travels.

Iraq TR. February 2014.

Departed JFK with Turkish 777 Economy stopped off in Istanbul for 9hrs, spent some time in Istanbul  (my second time) after midnight I departed to Ebl and was transferred to the Monoco hotel,  which was quite decent.

On day one I visited the Citadel of Arbil, which is claimed to be the oldest inhabited city in the world, then I visited the site of the Battle of Gaugamela, where Alexander the great defeated the Darius's army which lead to the fall of the Persian Empire.

Day 2 I visited the city of Lalish, The Yazidi's holiest site, hidden in the mountainous region in the Nineveh Province, the people are real nomads and rarely visited by foreigners.

I then continued to the city of AlQosh, in the Dohuk region.

AL Qosh is mentioned in tnach, in נחום, תרי עשר

The book of נחום stats off

"משא [על חורבן] נינוה, ספר חזון נחום האלקושי"

I visited the ruins of the Tomb of Nachum, which one upon a time was a pilgrimage site for  the Jews in Iraq.
Wow the native language used from one of the members led me to this TR
very bold of you.

Since it got bumped up in the list of TRs I ended up reading it only now but wow! I don't think I'll be heading to Iraq anytime soon so thanks for bringing the experience to us.

I was in Erbil back in 2013. I found it relatively very very safe, and it still remains that way. Farthest I travelled was Haji Omaran (180 kilometers northeast of Erbil). Safe is only the area administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), except Mosul. There is a large population of American and European expats, and there are daily flights from Vienna/Austrian Airlines.

Since the end of the war in the south of Iraq in 2003, not a single coalition soldier or foreigner has been attacked or kidnapped in the areas administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Yes, ISIS is not so far away, but it still feels an entire world apart. Also, with a visa on arrival in Erbil, one cannot enter Iraq proper.  Iraq proper is extremely dangerous, I wouldn't go there for all the money in the world, but northern Iraq (Kurdistan Autonomous Region) , no problem. There are checkpoints between the Kurdistan and Iraq proper regions, and those who enter Iraq proper on a Kurdish visa face getting arrested, imprisoned, and deported.

That's not accurate, a US navy Seal was killed this year in KRG controlled  territory.

There was a suicide attack outside the US ConsulateI in erbil killing 3.

Since 2013 they were dozens of Terror attacks KRG territory .
