Why go to PS for mid-week?

LA has all the activities, restaurants, etc.

PS is great for a weekend though.
There's stuff to do and see in PS midweek. I wouldn't recommend it for a person's first visit to SoCal, but if one has visited LA before then a couple days midweek in PS is fine.

BUMP  and rewriting the question

For a mid-week stay (can drive to minyan)

What part of town should we look for a house, North, South, Central or doesn't matter as long a propriety looks good?

Any areas to avoid?
I just went for a mid week stay last month.

We stayed in the Westin Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage. We found it (like many other's in this thread) to be a great property.

There is a local Chabad in Rancho Mirage. They make a BBQ every Tuesday  during the winter.

Check beforehand about minyanim they don't always have. You can drive 20 min to Chabad in Palm springs for davening. 7 and 8 Shachris. Mincha and mariv 10 min b4 shkiya.

Joshua Tree NP is nearby and worth a day of sightseeing. I'd recommend sticking to the north half of the park as it has much more of the sights that are worth your time. If you really like hiking and have seen the major parts of the north half then explore the rest of the park (but that's multiple days, and really more time than most people would be interested in spending in that park).

Hiking in PS

A round of golf with Obama (I didn't actually go a round with him, but I thought there was a chance)
I'm an optimist; but only because life isn't going to give me any other good choices.

We went to Joshua Tree and Living desert.  I would not recommend Joshua tree if you have young kids with you. On the other hand Living Desert would be great for little ones.

We mostly stayed on the property as there was enough to keep us busy.

What are people's thoughts on coming for Shabbos/Sunday?D Does Chabad have minyanim?

Any suggested reasonably-priced options for 5 adults (2 Br + pullout minimum)? Are there suite hotels, or good VRBO options?

Excellent Chabad minyan at 425 Avenida Ortega.
Look for VRBO/Airbnbs within a mile of that address.

Seeing insane cleaning fees on vrbo plus mandatory damage protection (in addition to regular service fee)

Security deposit is refundable. In socal airbnb has overtaken vrbo.com by leaps and bounds since vrbo.com added crazy service fees, which are not negotiable.

*if? Same is true of airbnb, but a lot of owners on both don't want to do that because they lose the protection they offer, C and the guest cannot leave a review, which is important for future business

i should rephrase my statement. Airbnb does. It allow putting your contact info on the post so it is much harder to go direct. But I guess you were able to do it

If anyone wants I have credit for these 3 houses which are all within walking distance of Chabad:

https://www.vrbo.com/314947
https://www.vrbo.com/880458
https://www.vrbo.com/323377

I can get you a discount off those rates if you're interested in one of them.
