It can't detect it if it's off. The "Laser detectors" out there can only detect laser if it's on, and even then I dont know how accurate it can be. A infra-red laser is a (non-visible) light beam, it can't really be detectable out of LOS, afaik.

And yes, laser has been used for more than four years, it's just very rare

but surely it would ring once the lasers directed at my car, even though it would be too late, but my detector was silent

I guess that's true. What state was it, Virginia?

When I got a ticket in NJ with an NY license, my lawyer advised that the the points wouldn't transfer so I should just pay (like you said). He did say that the points do stay on your "NJ" license (phantom) and that if I were to get future tickets in NJ and the points reached a certain amount they could revoke my rights to drive in NJ... Not 100% sure how that works but that is what I was told...

Why transfer your license?
NJ accepts incoming point transfers from all states, while NY only accepts from 2 or 3

In nj the law is you have 60 days to transfer ur license. If you dont a cop could write you out a ticket for not transferring, and if he really wants do be a jerk he could write you out for driving w/o a license - since after 60 days NJ wont acknowledge a  NY license

I had a NY license while living in NJ for 2 years... I got a handful of tickets, and the points didnt transfer. I now have a NJ license, and i dont have any points on it - So I'm amusing that when you switch the points dont transfer

Also I heard that soon NY will start collecting points from all states.

Assuming a person did not offer to the PO that he willfully had not changed his license, how could they tell you're not simply an out of state resident?

If you have NJ Plates, and a NY license thats pretty obvious

(And there were times I got pulled over driving a car with NY plates, obviously I didnt tell the PO)

+1, i dont think if ur transliterating something there is a "ph" - its only by english words that there is. (id say L'mafreia) and again for that reason theres prob no need for an "h" at the end.

I had NJ plates with my NY license. Got pulled over a few times, cop never said boo. Although maybe that was because my NY address was on my NJ registration.
