Maybe someone should make a photo hosting site that automatically posts the image exif data with all that information you're looking for, and Something Fishy should host his pictures there.
-oh, wait, never mind....
Brainstorm!! Thanks. Didn't realize Flicker offers that... oh wait a minute...never mind...

Wow, SF. that was really amazing! Your pictures are 1000x nicer than mine, which is totally awesome (I'm not anywhere near professional) and the descriptions that go along with them are really eloquent as well. Great job! Can't wait to hear about shabbos.

Thanks everyone :).

Stunning!!

I actually thought the TR was over ;) how many days is still coming?

Four. Two days Shabbos and two days on the Road to Hana.

I was thinking about going with my 3 and 5 year old to sunrise (we'll be jet lagged anyways). Based on your report it doesn't seem like a great idea. Thoughts?
Unless you're bringing winter clothes it's not practical for kids.

I agree. They'll be cold, tired, and miserable.

Maybe we should start a petition asking him to tell us which cameras, lenses, and modes, he uses for his pictures. Showing the picture and not telling how to capture them makes me sick of jealousy...

Another view of the crater:

Where were you standing/facing for this one? I can't visualize it.

The same spot on White Hill. It's a closer view of the left side of this picture (the hill is partially obscured by clouds):

Here you could see the Sliding Sands Trail on the right, which leads into the crater. On top of the trail you could make out the immense volcanoes of the Big Island in the distance - Meuan Kea on the left, and Meuna Loa on the right:

I don't think they'll be tired having gotten in the night before which is why I was considering it. But after reading your report I realized they'll be cold and miserable. Have to figure out if I will go
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

When I went to Maui I didn't plan on going for sunrise because I was with my kids ages 6 and 3. But the first night that we got there they both woke up at 2 am and would not go back to sleep.

Rather than be miserable that they woke up so early we decided to go for sunrise. Did not regret it for a second. It was a truly remarkable experience and we brought a bunch of blankets to wrap the kids in. They were so cold that they stayed wrapped up in the blankets while watching a group of natives playing the Ukulele and singing a song about the mountain.

After sunset we did a few hikes at the peak of Haleakala and another at the place where Fishy watched sunrise from. After that the kids were so exhausted and fell asleep in the car on the ride down. Whole outing actually helped them get closer to Hawaiain time  ;D

Wow, reading this while having a trip planned to Maui was immensely different than reading it the first time. Thanks for the incredible TR. You write very well and obviously the pictures are great. If you read any part of my Orlando TR, you'll know I'm a bit of a chicken, so I doubt I would do those crazy hikes or adventures, but I'm sure there will still be plenty to do.

Days 6 and 7, Friday and Shabbos:

Based on the psak we got the first time we went to Hawaii, we kept two days of Shabbos. The first time we did it was on the Big Island, so we know what to expect this time around: two days of doing absolutely nothing but relaxing. After running around for a week, being forced to relax for two days is absolute heaven.

We spent the time reading and taking long walks in our garden and the adjacent orchard. There was a pair of binoculars in the house, so I spent a while watching the planes come and go into the far-off airport as well.

Of course, it goes without saying that the prettiest sunset of the trip was on Friday afternoon when I couldn't take any pictures ;D... But standing on that porch singing Lecha Dodi was simply otherworldly.

All our Shabbos food was brought along, and we had full and complete Shabbos meals - down to the dips, chrain, and chick peas. The only thing we had different than home was soup at the day meal instead of cholent; I wasn't gonna risk eating it once it's been on the flame for two whole days :P.

(All of the following pictures were taken on Sunday before we left for the Road to Hana.)

The midday view of the garden; the orchard begins at the far trees. There were countless fruit trees interspersed with flowers in all colors of the rainbow; scores of birds kept up a never-ending chatter:

The property is a certified wildlife habitat as well:

Bananas:

Figs:

Peaches:

Avocados:

Olives:

Limes:

Macadamia nuts:

Grapefruits:

Bird of Paradise flower:

Orange Zinnia:

Red Hibiscus:

Aloe vera:

Unfortunately hardly anything was ripe, but on Sunday our hostess brought us a couple right-off-the-tree figs and macadamia nuts which were ripe enough.

On Motzei Shabbos we sat on the porch watching the Milky Way rise overhead:

The sky was studded with a million stars; this 9-minute exposure reveals the Earth spinning in relation to the North Star - the stars all appear to move around it:

I then headed down to the garden to capture one of my all-time favorite shots:

Up next: the Road to Hana!
