Jet Blue to Start Charging for Checked Bags
« on: November 19, 2014, 10:24:40 AM »
Jet Blue announced they will begin to start charging for checked bags on their cheapest fares. They plan to introduce a new pricing structure with 3 different types of fares. Jet Blue says the lowest fare will offer a discount to those not wishing to check bags.

Fare Families / Branded Fares -- Beginning in the first half of 2015, customers will be able to choose between three branded fare bundle options. The first of these will be designed for customers who do not plan to check a bag, while the latter two will offer one and two free checked bags, respectively, along with other attractive benefits, including additional TrueBlue points and increased flexibility. This new merchandising platform will enable JetBlue to tailor its offering to individual customers' needs in a way that is simple and transparent.

I wonder how long the cheapest fares will stay "discounted."

Interesting way to say they are charging for bags
They are not charging for bags, it's included, but if you should travel without bags, they will give you a discount!

Airlines should give free bag check and start charging for carry ons, those cause allot more trouble than the checked bag

Agree, it is the one thing that I like about Spirit. Boarding and deplaning goes really really quickly there.

I am sure that is coming.....with the checked bag fees remaining. Airlines will not give up on proven sources of revenue that does not have a negative impact on their loads.

Airlines rather give the free checked bags to their co branded credit card holders where they are making more money then what the checked bag fee brings in.

The airline industry is in the midst of a radical change to cut capacity, increase loads on their flights, and squeeze out every extra cent they can. They need to do this to remain profitable with in a time where fuel prices are so high.

This will come along with increased benefits and more exclusive service to their most loyal customers.

Although the mainline carriers are not classified as LCC's, they are continuing to resemble that model very closely.

Probably true, or lower limits for the size and weight.

Jetblue Blue to Blue Plus fare (includes 1 bag and 1 extra point per $) used to be difference of $15. Seems they switched this overnight (or past few days), now the difference is $23.

I'm seeing $26 difference on higher priced flights and $23 on lower priced flights.

Southwest Baby!

When they get their new booking system in May, it may be easier for them to charge for it.

I see the difference JFK>BOS at $23. A while back they removed the free bag to Cuba and didn't update their website

So what's the point in pre paying for your bag if you only save $2? I doubt they're planing on the additional bonus point to convince people to buy the blue plus fare.

Paying $3-6 more actually, first bag still $20 at kiosk.
