urgent help needed- italy no health insurance and broken hip
« on: November 22, 2014, 10:37:56 PM »
hi all,

on friday, erev shabbos my grandmother was in italy (milan) and she slipped on the floor and broke her hip. the problem is that her travelers insurance ran out the day before. (for some reason she didn't buy extra for this last separate part of the trip). she needs surgery but her doc recommnded that she wait until she returns to the states. she is supposed to come back on monday.

a few questions:
1- does anyone know how it works in hospitals in italy with no insurance (like will they charge her an arm and a leg for her stay)?
2- how can she fly between milan-jfk laying flat only (is that even possible?)
3- can anyone help us with this?

thank you :)

Does here regular insurance cover international?

UA has a flight MXP-EWR that has lie flat business, or you have AA to JFK that has lie flat but not at 100% flat.

ETA: or it seems Alitalia is also lie flat to JFK

That's going to be a challenge, but it's worth calling the airlines to see what they can accommodate...

No. All airlines make the seats go back into full upright position for taxi, take-off, and landing. Only while in the air can they be in full lie flat position. This is due to safety regulations. Airlines won't let it be any other way.

Maybe for extreme circumstances like this they will make an exception it's at least worth a phone call
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

TAM let Rafi stay horizontal for landing because he was sleeping.
I was shocked.

I'm sure there are ways to travel for medical reasons.  Call the airlines and ask.

Call your insurance provider, your local embassy or consulate, and the airlines.

Would the Italian hospital allow her to be discharged with a fractured hip?
If you have an accepting MD in the States who would perform her procedure, ask them to advise.
Follow Mordy788's advice as well.
