Closing a United account

Hi there.

I hope there isn't a thread discussing this but I didn't see one so let me know if I should move this post.

I recently used a flight that United charged me too few miles. After I called to confirm that those miles would stay in my account, I used them to book a business class upgrade. After my flight, I saw that I owed 24k to United. They caught it several months after they made the mistake and wayyyy after I called to confirm I had the miles.
Now I'm locked out of my account and I opened a new one.
But I'm worried that when I get new miles (from my explorer bonus) they're gonna automatically merge my accounts and I'll loose all those points or if I go for another explorer again, I won't be able to merge them without merging all three.
Will R hey let me
Close my account over the phone or is there a html to close accounts?
