Wifi Extender for Optimum Wifi?
« on: November 30, 2014, 10:58:29 PM »
Can a Wifi extender be setup for Optimum Wifi? or can it only be setup for a private network?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

The same way you would enter your own network password? I have never setup a Wifi extender so I don't know. Are you saying that you don't think it can be done?

I don't think so because optimums login is a webpage not a router password

I'm not sure I was just wondering how you would get around that

This article seems to say that it can work...Anyone have experience doing this?

You can connect with your computer or phone and login, then change the WiFi MAC address of the extender/router to match the one that you logged in with.

I'm currently doing it with a simple router set as a repeater if you have auto login then your device will login automatically,  if not you will be prompted to enter login info. Since technically it's a public network you don't even need a password to logon with a repeater just a password to logon your device.
ETA: i dont know how secure it is for secure transactions.

You do this with Optimum? To clarify your saying you don't need to setup the router to a pick up the right network? You just have to set router as repeater? Is that a switch on the router? Any difference between router and extender for this purpose?

its set to log onto optimum which doesn't require a password to connect to the network once connected you need an optimum login

go to you routers web page, make sure it's set as a repeater, and search for available networks.

I want to use an obi with GV on optimum WiFi.
If I set up the router as a repeater like @moko, will it work with the obi? or does it have to be dchp to assign IP addresses which (cmiiw) the repeater doesn't do.

Would cloning the Mac address of the router (more complicated) for sure work?

So I followed this

Yay! My obi is working.

But for some reason, my devices (phone, computer) can not login to the SSID "MY REPEATER" that I set up.
Can anyone think of a reason why?
TIA!

Bump please?

The only difference between what I configured on my version of wrt, and these instructions are highlighted in the attached pics. (I dont have the option to select SSID enabled etc..)

My obi is working, and when I connect my computer with a wire to the router it also works. Why is the wireless network not working?
My devices are discovering the "GRAYEAGLE" network, but when I input the correct passphrase it doesn't connect.  :-\

@BAHayman your instructions seem more complicated. Do you disagree with Moko that it can be done straight?

That can work. My understanding is that the repeater becomes the client and will need to authenticate its MAC address, but I guess that the authentication prompts can pass through to the repeaters clients.

Not sure why it didn't work in my case. Could be because we were using enterprise routers and Optimum won't allow that range of MAC addresses to authenticate knowing that it is not a computer/phone.

Can an extender such as TP-LINK TL-WA850RE N300 work for Optimum as well? Or do I need one that functions as a router as well? (I'm not sure where I picked it up that it shouldn't, and why? but I have that in my head).

Is a Network adapter like this Alfa AWUS036NH a better option? I have little network experience, and am pretty confused by all the different kinds of devices available?

The extender will work, the ones that are the easiest you just select the network you want to extend from a drop down list, then you are good.
