Chase making it hard to avoid checking fees
« on: December 30, 2010, 06:36:09 PM »
I received a letter from chase today stating that DD to avoid fee has been raised to 500 dollar minimum.
Chase CheckingSM
We are changing how your monthly Service Fee is waived with
statement periods beginning February 8, 2011.
Monthly Service Fee – Not charged in any statement period
when you:
Have at least one direct deposit of $500* or more. The direct
deposit, which must be an ACH credit, may include a payroll,
pension or government benefit payment, such as Social Security;
Have five or more purchases using your Chase Debit Card or
Chase ATM Card post to your account. Withdrawals from ATMs
or cash advance transactions do not qualify.
Otherwise, $6

*Two or more direct deposits that add up to $500 or more but do not
individually equal or exceed $500, do not qualify.
Debit card usage will still waive the fee.
PS If you have less than the 6 dollar fee you'll only be charged whatever is in your account.

You can always push and pull 500 dollars ACH, (I stopped doing ACH once I figured out that they can't charge more than your balance).

I got this too. I have DD but I'm getting fed up with Chase (I miss WaMu), can anyone suggest any good free checking accounts?

My favorites are TD (min 100 balance?) and Schwab although as of late TD began being strict that they won't cash check with an initial instead of first name.

Schwab looks nice, they reimburse ATM fees and offer free checks and free postage-paid envelopes. The only downside is that deposits go by mail, so checks probably take forever to clear.

Our policy is to make funds from your cash and check deposit available to you on the first Business Day after the day we receive your deposit.

However in 6.1 it states that longer delays may apply.

I used it all the time when on vacation in Israel, no fees!! (I also tried TD, no fees either - same exact exchange rate).

Bank of America gives free checking if you sign up via web. I haven't had much problems with them at all over the years and they are right in the neighborhood. Just use the ATM to make your deposits instead of waiting for a teller which can be long at times at the EP branch.

I know a lot of people have been happy with TD bank too.

I'm pretty sure they don't, nor does it make sense as they don't put your account in negative.
