Mileage Run on AA
« on: December 09, 2014, 10:27:21 AM »
Hello DDF!

I am trying to help my wife keep her EXP status, but she is a little less than 19,300 Elite-Status Points short for this year.

I know I have read in the past about Mileage Runs and I am hoping that the Elite-Status Minds here on DDF will be able to help me sort out how she can make EXP by the end of the year.

Our only restrictions would be shabbat and (obviously) the MR costing way too much to be worth the trip.

Please let me know what you think are our best options.

Thanks and Be Well,
Zemr

Sorry... I knew I was going to forget something  :P!

We are NYC based, so JFK and LGA are the usual starting points for us (occasionally we have flown from EWR).

Thanks Again and Be Well!

So just saw this: http://thepointsguy.com/2015/07/founderscard-status-challenge/

Basically, for flying 10K EQM on AA, you get Platinum status for 1.5 years. I have 28K extra Citi TY lying around, which translates into roughly $460, so at even 4cpm I figure I could use that on a mileage run to get this promo.

Should I do it?

Pros: AA Plat status (I never had any airline status in my life besides WN Companian Pass)

Cons: $395 Founders Card fee, sitting on the plane, (wasting Citi TY points?)

Definitely not.

Why? and do you have a better idea to earn status?

What's this guy hocking? You can get this same challenge by picking up the phone and calling AA. You don't need a special high AF card to qualify. Am I missing something?

Because mid-tier status isn't worth much.

They charge a fee for the challenge, though the fee is less than Founders Card, so I have no idea.

What were you expecting from mid-tier status?

1 more free bag than the AA cc gives you is worth your money and time?
Upgrades have to be purchased. And even then you're behind the EXP guys who get it free.

Dan, you call Plat mid-tier? It's not good for upgrades? Seems that it is. That's all I really care about.

You need to buy the upgrades with AA!
That PIT-LAX flight is going to cost you 5 stickers.

:( I am not going to question you even though I was sure that regular Platinum would get me automatic upgrades. If so, platinum is worthless. So how do I get executive platinum?

Only free on flights under 500 miles (i.e. the RJ flights it doesn't matter on).
Otherwise you need to buy stickers if you're not EXP.

Fly 100K/do an EXP challenge.
Or switch to an airline that gives free upgrades to all elites (DL/UA)
