Big fan of Ben Shapiro but don't agree with him on healthcare. Economically (affordability), having a single payer system gives economies of scale, thereby reducing costs.
From the perspective of availability and reliability, there are many Western countries with single payer systems that have patient outcomes on par with good US hospitals. I think that Republicans are too boxed in on this issue.

California recently did a cost analysis of implementing a single payer system. It is outrageously expensive.

Economics of scale only works if you create efficiencies and not inefficiencies. Some Western countries may have outcomes and availability on par with the US, but many do not. Whether there are even some is questionable since the numbers are measured with bias. As one who has experienced single payer with family members I can assure you that it is not alaways the case. What are the differences between the systems that made some supposedly good and others horrible? How will we ensure that we get a good system and not a bad one?

What's the drawbacks of NY essential plan compared to Medicaid (besides the $20 a month and small copays)?

Is child health plus the same as Medicaid?

Received a letter that my marketplace insurance (HealthFirst NY) filed for a 27% increase in 2018.

Are these granted? Will it really go up that much? or it's an arbitrary number?

Actual increase might be less than filed for, though it is likely to be significant.

When NYS set up their exchange, they used Oxford as a benchmark for all insurers to compare to.

There's no free lunch. All insurers operating in the same market will have very similar costs. Sometimes, they will underprice their offering in order to gain market share, but when they file their rates, they need to justify everything from an actuarial standpoint. Their actual experience cannot be ignored (unlike unrealistic assumptions - where everyone can pretend), which is why we see the double digit increases.

Medicaid being the Rolls-Royce of insurance coverage in NYC, it also coverts OTC medications, supplies and DME (for example: tylenol, motrin, etc. etc. - where a Dr prescription was written for those). I don't think any other plan covers those.

Can someone explain how this is a benefit for the CEO. They can always work at a different company. It just gives the insurance companies the opportunity to compete for talent on a level plaing field by the COMPANY being able to deduct the same as other companies.
