Unaccompanied Minor
« on: December 09, 2014, 07:47:18 PM »
United has an annoying policy that unaccompanied minors can be booked only on non-stop flights. [This is presumably due to last year's fiasco, where inept United workers lost children. In typical United fashion, the problem is "solved" by taking away the option altogether.]

A phone agent just told me that I can book two connecting flights as separate tickets, and then it is not a problem to have my child travel unaccompanied. To me that sounds crazy, so I just wanted to know if anyone with knowledge about this can chime in.

If you are paying an UM fee, o think that a parent/guardian must pick them up at the arriving gate. Doubt they'll let them on another flight. How old is the child-do you trust them to fly alone? IME they font ask for ID-if they look old enough.

He is with an older (and responsible) sibling who is not yet 18.
This is so annoying.

I feel for you. I would do it. Once they get passed security, the airline has no idea how old the sibling is. Domestic?
In general, TSA has no clue of all the airline rules of minors(they all have different cutoffs), and at boarding they don't ask for ID.

does anyone have any delta experience, I'm arranging a flight for a 14 year old 1 month away from his 15th Bday which is delta's unaccompanied minor age cutoff, is a hard coded system rule maybe YMMV? (he looks older and is very comfortable traveling)
TIA everyone!

Domestic?
Should be no issue. Book as an adult. (he's in his 15th year...   ;)   )

I don't know for sure, but I bet their computer will calculate his exact age from DOB.

I have a similar question.

Looking at a AA intl flight with 2 of my kids, and I want to book myself and one child on a ticket and then use Asia miles for the other child who is 12. Since the 12 year old is traveling with me, will AA give me any problems, or make me purchase the UM fee?

Make his DOB older.

Just saw on a United flight: there was a minor flying, the fa’s kept coming before departure to make sure she knows what to do in case of an emergency landing… time and again they explained to her how to put on the mask and life vest, I’d be scared to fly with such introductions.
Am Yisroel have no fear, Moshiach will be here this year!

What is required for 14 year old child traveling with relative, UA, from USA to EU
Tickets bought separately but airline later attached the child to relatives booking
Jews ≠ Zionists
Palestinians ≠ Hamas
Satmar ≠ SatmarHQ

Backwards thinking, I bet this isn’t in their UM training materials.

This morning 3 of my 16 year-old neighbors were scheduled to fly from Jacksonville, FL to NY to join a group bus to camp upstate. When they arrived at the airport at 4 AM they were told that Delta has a "weather embargo" that they can't fly minors when there are weather concerns, because they can't be responsible for them in case of irregular operations. Flights on other airlines were sold out, so one of the parents ended up having to drive them to camp.

1. Has anyone else heard of this policy before?
2. If this is indeed a policy, shouldn't Delta contact them a day before the flight to let them work on alternative options?
3. Are they entitled to any compensation for this?
