Go to about:preferences, check "Warn me when closing multiple tabs".  Then attempt to close firefox :)
That is scary, but it works.  Nice to have you back.

Re RESTORE does not open closed tabs after a crash:
1. slightly possible that two new browsing sessions were opened instead of one so I need the ante-previous session restored (two back).
2.  alt>history>show all history>import and backup>restore> [choose] today  =This shows today's date on the list with the number of tabs that were closed (I won't tell you how many  :o )>[press] OK = This gives "This will replace all of your current bookmarks with the backup. Are you sure?"
After pressing OK, I don't see any tabs on the screen.  Why does the message change the word from 'tabs' in history to 'bookmarks'?

WHat I have sometimes been able to do is to intentionally "crash" FF by closing it via the end task in windows task manager. This brings up the restore session window with a list of available sessions to restore. I then choose the most recent one with all tabs.

Cool! I'll keep that in mind :)

FWIW you can skip the task manager by typing this into the Run box:
Code: [Select]
taskkill /f /im firefox.exe
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Is there a way to extract my open tabs from sessionstore.js? I backed up my profile and made a new one, and had about 10 open tabs that I want to reopen. I opened sessionstore.js but it contains about 500 urls... does that make sense?

I was having a hard time parsing it in Sublime because it's too large. I just pasted it into http://jsoneditoronline.org/ and it's really helpful!

It looks like
Window = each FF window
Tabs = each tab (includes the full history of that tab!)
Entry = each history item (the first one in the list is the current one)
URL = the url of it

I was able to expand each node and copy out the url I needed.

Theres also a section for Closed Tabs. This file is mighty useful and interesting, once you are able to read it!!

Thanks for your help!

Okay that job is done and I highly recommend it to anyone whose Firefox has gotten slow over the years (or months). My Firefox is MUCH faster now, B"H!

What: Creating a new FF profile and importing all old data.

Steps:
  • Sign in to Firefox Sync (if you haven't yet done so) and make sure it's synced.
  • Optionally: make a list of your open tabs, to save time for later.
  • Go to about:addons, and for each extension that has an Options button, click it, and if you see any options that you've changed, write them down or take a screenshot or something. Note: you only need to do this for extensions whose settings show in the addons page (the url will show "about:addons"), and not extensions whose settings are on the extension's website, or in a popup.
  • Visit this link: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings and click the blue RESET FIREFOX button.
  • When it's done, close Firefox
  • Copy the places.sqlite file from your old profile (on your desktop) to the new one (see "how to find my profile" in this link.
  • Open firefox, and sign in to firefox sync. You should get back your tabs, bookmarks, history, addons etc.
  • If you don't get your open tabs back, either reopen them from your saved list, or find the sessionstore.js file in your old profile folder, and see my post above for instructions on how to pull out the list of tabs.
  • Restart Firefox (this will finish installing your addons that you just got back)
  • Go to about:addons, and reapply your settings
  • Some addons (eg: lastpass) may require you to log in again.

All done!

(Not liable for any lost data, though I did not lose any of mine B"H)

I've lost all my open tabs and I want to retrieve them before I shut off the computer.

I have FF set to open to restore unclosed tabs upon starting, but I seem to remember "something" (?) may have been a bit different upon shutting down just before this happened.  When I turned on computer and opened FF, only one new tab came up.  It does not give me an option to restore all previous tabs.  I need to restore all previous tabs before the current tabs.  Any way?

Try manually crashing it through task manager. That often brings up the option of previous sessions.

Hey--interesting! I just have to be sure I am opening the correct previous session.  maybe I should go back 2 or 3 to be sure it won't count this single tabbed session as one (maybe it was twice).

Um...how do I manually crash it there?

It will show the open tabs. Just end task

Did it, but...it just reopened everything to the few tabs I had opened in FF when I ended the process.  My settings are set to open to last session.  Should I unmark that and then maybe it can't reopen to that and may ask me which session?  I am just getting further and further away from the "previous" session of all my missing tabs session though.

just reading upthread a bit...

How can I tell how many open tabs I have without using an add-on or extension?

When I reopened FF after end tasking it, my previous session automatically came up.  I have seen the restore button and screen in the past, but I only see one button to push called RESTORE.  Where are the other options listed?
