ime avira isn't great
top 3 are kaspersky, nod32, avast.  avast is free.

sorry, just saw you wrote "mac".
try clamxav or avast or sophos.  dont think avira is good.

If you have Vista or XP - Get a new computer :)
If you have Windows 7 or 8, see if your computer came with Microsoft Security Essentials.
If it did, activate it, if not, download it free. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download

It's the best antivirus out there, it's made by Microsoft, and it's free!!!

Newsflash: There's no need for all the mcafee/kaspersky/avast companies to exist anymore but they don't want you to know that!!

Oy.  Please don't listen to the guy above me.  I get infected computers to fix all the time.  Please don't rely on MSE.
Also, notice the dates of the posts that MarkS linked to.

Please see this chart:
http://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/avc_factsheet2014_10.pdf
Notice how they took MSE out of review because not even close.

Also, MarkS, please note that he is talking about a Mac (OSX)

Stay away from AVG - they are terrible with Windows, IME.
I don't own a Mac, so I can't tell you from experience.  But I've read that Clamxav is the least resource-hungry.

If you use an internet filter, you might want to research which antivirus programs work well with it. Some filters don't work with some antiviruses, and can slow down your computer a lot.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Windows?  Kaspersky. But PURE comes with a lot of unnecessary features that will hog your sys resources.  So only install needed/core features.

I tried Sophos, Avira, and clamvax. Sophos found 3 worms left by the others. All free.

I prefer Kaspersky. It's regularly available free after rebate. If your system is a bit older, it could slow you down.

12.95 to be exact. I split it with 3 people so that costs around $4. ;)
