Generally when you earn miles for activity from a certain date the miles will have a posting date from then and even if your miles expire they will retroactively reactivate automatically.

For example if you have a car rental that you didn't get miles for in January and your miles expire in March you can claim those miles in April and the posting date will be for January which will reactivate your account.
