Can someone please explain how exactly would I credit to AA? What do I need to do once I'm ticketed?

As I was booking JFK-JNB they quoted me $368. When I tried to book they said prices are changing and it was $1000 more and now there is no more dates (I can find) anyone out there that knows something I don't???

I read up that you can bid for an upgrade starting from €400 and some people have successfully been upgraded at $1500 (per leg iinm)
