Also I assumed that SPG points hotels have the same rates whether you book 3 months in advance, or if you book last minute. However when I search there aren't really any good options. I'm not sure if that's because there isn't availability being that it's last minute or possibly because I'm unfamiliar with booking hotels with points.

no that is for cash rates. I usually use the app to check ballpark prices and then book direct with the hotel which is usually cheaper. If not I would file a BRG claim depending on the chain.

If you want to use SPG points the rate will be the same, it does not get cheaper closer in.

If you are using CSR points then the amount needed would depend on the cash rate

Btw it seems that there is a major event going on in NYC tomorrow. Most hotels are overpriced or sold out.
