All miles flown this year count towards status.
However, a status match won't get you closer to the next level.

For example, if you need to fly 10k to complete a silver challeng, once you have silver you'll still need an additional 40k (50k total) to reach Gold, not 25k (the difference between silver and gold)

So if I'm going to make silver this year by flying there really is no point wasting a status match?

Correct. Unless you want the benefits now, for those flights that you would otherwise be using to qualify for silver - if you go the BIS route, you won't get any silver benefits until after those flights.

So if I do a challange and am booking tickets for 5 people (2 adults 3 kids) to Miami. Will that be enough for me to pass the challange (and will I have gold status during the challenge?)

you will have gold through the challenge, but no that will not be enough, and only your flights counts towards the challenge.

AA Status Challenge

From SD:

AA (Aadvantage) Status Challenge - fast track to gold or platinum status
If you're one of those people who takes a couple pretty lengthy flights, but never quite enough for status, this could help you big time.

American Airlines is offering a Status Challenge for 2016. It's only valid for people who do not currently have status with the Aadvantage program, and it works like this.

Sign up by calling 888-697-5636. Once you register for the program, you'll have 90 days to meet the requirements for status. Meet it, and you'll have that status for the rest of the year.

7,500 EQMs (elite qualifying miles) + $120 = gold status (first level - usually requires 25,000 miles in a calendar year)
12,500 EQMs + $200 = platinum status (second level - usually 50,000 miles in a year)

A list of benefits per status level can be found here: https://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantag...e&from=Nav

Basically: if you have ONE round trip international flight coming up in the next three months, you'll be able to qualify for at least gold, if not platinum, status. Well worth it if you fly even a couple times a year, if you ask me.

I am flying NYC - FCO soon in BA F.

If my math is correct rt to FCO is 4279 miles, x2 is 8558 miles. Times 1.5 for the premium class EQM's should give me a total of 12837 eqm's = just enough for the platinum.

Does that math make sense?

Per the link below, it seems that my flight (class I) would actually earn 2 eqm's per mile flown. Putting me at 17,116 eqms earned for the trip.

So if I'm gold, I can't do the platinum challenge?

What if I make a new account for this challenge and then merge them?
Will they allow me to make another account? (I guess I could add a non existent middle initial)
Will they allow me to later merge them and carry over status?
Will I get shut down for this?

-1. You're looking at the AA chart, not the BA chart. BA chart applies in your case and would give you 1.5

though 1.5 would be enough regardless.

How long does it take for this challenge to "activate"?
