Topic Wiki

There are no Credit Cards that will cover Liability.
Visa, Amex, MasterCard and Discover will cover Loss Damage Waiver / Collision (CDW/LDW)

Cards that cover CDW/LDW in Israel:
Chase: Sapphire Preferred ($95 annual fee)
American Express Gold $195AF
Discover (accepted in Israel as Diners' Club): More, Open Road, Miles, Motiva (none have annual fees)   Policy link

You must present at the time of rental a copy of your policy or a document from the CC company stating that the insurance coverage applies to Israel . You will still have to purchase 3rd Party Liability, but you will save some shekels and have no deductible for damages.

Visa phone number : 800-VISA-911

Visa does NOT cover:
  • Cadillac Escalade
  • Mercedes GL series (they do cover GLK)
  • Mercedes E class
  • Corvettes
  • Camaro ZL1

AMEX premium will charge $24.95 per rental and they cover:
  • Up to $100K for damage or theft and accidental death or dismemberment coverage ($250,000 for California residents), up to $15,000 for excess medical expenses per person, and up to $5,000 for excess personal property coverage ($15,000 for Florida residents)
  • Any car from Mercedes, pickup trucks, Porsche and 15 passenger vans.
  • There's no need to pay for the full amount with money, even if it's with points or coupon rental and you pay just $2 fees they will still cover you.

Those that do NOT have a credit card insurance, here is an alternative:  https://worldwideinsure.org.

When renting a car internationally, do most people just use one of the CCs that offer CDW/LDW or do you also buy liability?

I used the sapphire and it was the best decision I made. The car I rented had gotten damage I was charged and I simply used the SP benefits through Chase and a few weeks later I had a check in my pocket to reimburse me. Free protection is great.

Sweet! Just seems like "liability" is not covered by the card. I'm curious what that means exactly.

Has anyone used Amex premium rental insurance? My rental car was recently broken into and a laptop bag stolen. I no longer have access to the receipt of any items in the bag (it's over 5 years old). Anyone have experience dealing with this? Will I need the receipts and what is their verification process?

Credit card car rental insurance
« Reply #314 on: June 06, 2014, 02:59:26 PM »
I rent cars quite often. Over the past few years, I've rented all different types of cars (including SUVs  minivans & pick-up trucks) using my credit card for insurance. This summer I plan on driving a 24ft budget moving truck cross country, so I was trying to find out if my credit cards would cover my truck. I read the fine prints and spoke to agents on the phone for both my amex gold and my citi executive advantage mastercard. They all say that it does not cover any SUVs minivans pickups vans trucks or any vehicle valued over $50,000. Has anyone rented anything larger than a full size car?? Did you pay for insurance?

Pickup trucks are not covered unless you use Amex premium coverage. Mini van and suv on the other hand are covered with regular CC insurance

That's what I thought too until I read the fine print. I called them and they told me the same thing that suvs and minivans are not covered.
