Topic Wiki

There are no Credit Cards that will cover Liability.
Visa, Amex, MasterCard and Discover will cover Loss Damage Waiver / Collision (CDW/LDW)

Cards that cover CDW/LDW in Israel:
Chase: Sapphire Preferred ($95 annual fee)
American Express Gold $195AF
Discover (accepted in Israel as Diners' Club): More, Open Road, Miles, Motiva (none have annual fees)   Policy link

You must present at the time of rental a copy of your policy or a document from the CC company stating that the insurance coverage applies to Israel . You will still have to purchase 3rd Party Liability, but you will save some shekels and have no deductible for damages.

Visa phone number : 800-VISA-911

Visa does NOT cover:
  • Cadillac Escalade
  • Mercedes GL series (they do cover GLK)
  • Mercedes E class
  • Corvettes
  • Camaro ZL1

AMEX premium will charge $24.95 per rental and they cover:
  • Up to $100K for damage or theft and accidental death or dismemberment coverage ($250,000 for California residents), up to $15,000 for excess medical expenses per person, and up to $5,000 for excess personal property coverage ($15,000 for Florida residents)
  • Any car from Mercedes, pickup trucks, Porsche and 15 passenger vans.
  • There's no need to pay for the full amount with money, even if it's with points or coupon rental and you pay just $2 fees they will still cover you.

Those that do NOT have a credit card insurance, here is an alternative:  https://worldwideinsure.org.

Thanks for your responses.
For instance?

I have no assets, and them charging me in case of an accident is a risk I'm willing to take for the 300 dollar difference, as I won't be doing much driving anyways.

I was just concerned about the legalities.
A $300 difference? Think $300k if you do any serious damage.
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.

Once the rental is closed as in I got the recipe, does that mean I wont hear from the rental company if there is damage?

Has anyone paid for AMEX's primary ins add-on, for $25 or so?  Giving all I am reading about loopholes on ins rentals, via cc or your own ins, it seems worthwhile for some peace of mind.

No before you rent is just an authorization, when you return the car you actually pay.

I just looked at the details of amex.  It doesnt cover liability or the rental loss of use.  So why is it so great?

Nobody covers liability. You're sure it doesn't cover loss of use?

I have the Amex SPG card. What should I pay for when renting and what not? Also, does your regular car insurance (Allstate) cover certain things? Yes, I can ask them but today is Sunday and I was wondering.

I'm sure this has been answered before but can't find it:

I currently have out a rented a car in Israel (from Thrifty) on my Chase cc and got some dents and scratches on the car:

1) What should I expect to happen upon returning the car?

2) Anything I should be doing before returning the car?

Please be as detailed as possible.  Thanks!!

Decline everything from the rental agency. Amex will pay for whatever damage that Allstate doesn't if you get into an accident (secondary coverage). Your personal insurance should also cover liability. (If you want primary coverage, opt into amex premium coverage, and use a different non amex card to pay at the end of the rental, if you haven't done any damage to the vehicle.)

Depends how banged up it was and depends on the dents and scratches you made if you want a detailed response ask a detailed question

Sorry for the blank stare that you can't see. Can you explain that last sentence for the inexperienced renter.

There isn't any 'structural' damage to the car.  I was driving in a very tight parking lot and scratched up the paint on the side of the car (minivan).  The scratches are approximately several inches in length...
