I have a video on my Phone showing my flight stuck in a lightning storm right above Belitung island (more or less the same place where QZ8501 allegedly disappeared)a few months ago, I was flying AirAsia from Indonesia to Singapore...

It wasn't that bad actually, but we did drop a bit several times - We also lost lights/power in the cabin at one point for about 30 seconds.

But you went straight into the storm. They didn't try to go around it.

I saw on a CNN report that they usually don't reroute due to storms and the planes are built to withstand lightning etc.

Actually, right after the first lighting hit us (at least thats what it felt like) the pilot banked hard to starboard and brought the plane abeam of the storm so it was port side for most of the journey.

Permission to climb above the threatening clouds was denied. There was no space. 6 other commercial airliners were crowding the surrounding airspace. AP
