16,000 Miles Short for UA Gold

I have 33,000 EQMs for 2014 on United putting me at 16,000 short for UA Gold in 2015. I'm taking a short flight to Miami this week which will give me an additional 1,000 EQMs.

I'm only being offered to purchase 8,000 EQMs for my maximizer on the itinerary.  What's the best, and cheapest, way to get the 16,000 I need?  Think it's worth it?

If you flew 33,000 miles this year you probably can live with Silver on United.

If one has UA Silver through RewardsPlus with Marriott, what is the easiest way to get to Gold?

United is only letting me buy 8,000 more EQMs on my flight for tomorrow.  If I book another reservation for tomorrow evening, purchase the EQMs, then cancel the reservation, will I still keep the additional EQMs?  Is there any particular flight/distance where purchasing EQMs is cheaper? Thanks!

Don't know if gold is worth the Hassel,
Either way you can do a MR for example lax-tlv round trip on united for $787 will be 16,000 miles.
