Interlining baggage from El Al to Alitalia at FCO airport?
« on: December 30, 2014, 01:08:34 PM »
I'm trying to set up an itinerary arriving in Rome on El Al at 8:45 AM, and departing on a domestic Alitalia flight to Venice at 8:20 PM (so the connection time in FCO is 11 hours, 35 minutes), like so:

I know for a fact that it's a perfectly legitimate itinerary, because I can successfully book both flights on the same reservation; it's just that it works out cheaper to book the Rome-Venice segment on a separate ticket. So...

1) Will El Al make any problems at check-in when the passenger asks to have the bags checked all the way through to Venice, if FCO-VCE is a separate ticket?

2) Either way (same ticket or separate ticket)... is an 11.5-hour stop considered "short" enough that they'll transfer the bags from LY to AZ without pax intervention? I.e. Can the passenger simply leave the airport and go tour Rome, without even touching their bags? Or will they be required to collect the bags, find somewhere to store them, and then check them in again for the Venice flight? (Needless to say, that would be a HUGE pain...)

Thanks in advance!

Even though it's separate tickets? Some airlines can be a PITA about that...

Also, the length of the stop has me a bit concerned. No need to worry?

Interline agreements only apply when it is the same ticket. Different tickets, the airline agent can refuse. For example, United Airlines has interline agreements with a host of carriers. However starting soon it will only thrucheck if the carrier is a member of the Star Alliance.

If they agree to to thrucheck, the length of stop does not matter. The tag is coded to go to the next air craft.

I would call the airline and ask, and then document what you are told in an OSI or SSR to CKIN

As 11 hours, this should be no issue.
BTW there should be an existing thread regarding interlining

Have you ever connected in FCO specifically?

As 11 hours, this should be no issue.

How about 13-14 hours, then?

BTW there should be an existing thread regarding interlining

I couldn't find one...

no, but it shouldnt be relevant. if the tag shows your final destination, that should be enough
