"Promotional codes are good for one-time use only and must be redeemed by 8/31/15". However, no reason not to redeem it now - if you are already an amazon prime member they will just tack on an extra year to your subscription.

I have an amazon prime membership and had sent myself a gift of prime. My membership didnt expire and i just tried activating it to extend and it said i already have prime so theyd give me a $79 gift card instead. Be careful...

for those you just need to wait until your prime expires...this 1 year is from amex everyday i believe these can extend a current membership

This conflicts with what others are reporting. I'd be interested in paying $80 to extend Prime a year, but not if I end up with an $80 gift card instead.

Maybe I did something wrong to get the message I did. Regardless, it ended up working out more or less. I called amazon and explained what happened. The lady said because it was a gift she could not do anything with it, not even cancel (I could do that), but she ended up refunding me $79 plus a $20 credit so that I could just buy another year of prime on my primary account. In the end i get 10 months free prime, i just need to use a different amazon account for 10 months till it expires.
