I'm with AT&T, no idea what the total is. My employer pays for it.

Is he hiring? not just for the phone ... I happen to be looking:)

It is an awesome setting though, when turned on.
The S5 has it as well.
The ability to set reminders, ask google questions, send text messages without unlocking my phone is awesome

so i currently have a basic phone. I'm due for an upgrade in a few months. i assume i can upgrade to the S6, activate it, then deactivate it, and give it to someone else to put in their T-mobile SIM card and use it as their own?

No. You have to be on a internet plan to upgrade to a smart phone ( I am assuming you're not if you have a basic phone).

theres no such thing anymore as a non internet plan. any new plan has minimum of 1 GB on the plan. be that as it may I'm part of a family plan that has smart phones on it. i just specifically have a basic phone
